About Féile
Féile an Phobail meaning “festival of the people” is a well-established organisation with 32 years of experience and development of world class arts and cultural events.
Established 32 years ago, the once fledging festival has went on to welcome in excess of 100,000 people every single year to the city of Belfast and is internationally recognised as being one of the largest festivals of its type in Europe. The August Féile, also known as the west Belfast Festival, is a community celebration of global culture that takes place in Belfast during the first two weeks of August each year, a time synonymous in the past with Internment commemorations in Nationalist and Republican areas
The August Féile is our flagship festival now entering its 32nd year (2020) and is Irelands Biggest Community Arts Festival and Summer School. It takes place over a ten day period and presents spectators with a wide range of arts and cultural activities, including music concerts, comedy, exhibitions, discussions and debates, youth events, literary events, dramas, family, out door and community events, street performances, carnival parade, international food fayres, sports, tours and walks, attracting in excess of 90,000 visitors from across the Island of Ireland, the UK and Internationally.
The festival brings an array of events including music, comedy, talks (Irelands biggest summer school), tours, theatre and family centred activities. In recent years the Festival has gathered a reputation for hosting high profile world class artists and festival contributors, including ‘Olly Murs and UB40’, Shane McGowan, The Kaiser Chiefs, Christy Moore, Noam Chomsky, Robert Fisk, Albie Sachs, and many more. The rise and enhanced reputation of our ‘Discussions and Debates’ section, now classed as Irelands biggest summer school with over 70 world class talks and debates is the events unique selling point, helping attract world class contributors and world wide audiences to the festival.
Having started as a small ‘community festival’, Féile has now grown to become Irelands biggest festival of its kind, and one of the biggest in Europe, offering visitors a truly authentic cultural experience, a place that delights in sounds, the spoken word, the beat of rhyme, the rhythm of song, the crackle of the opened book, ensuring visitors will leave with a unique experience and a willingness to return!
