This summer marks the sad anniversary of the introduction of the use of plastic and rubber bullets to our streets. This event will reflect on the lives of those lost, the injuries sustained and why the call is still made to ban plastic and rubber bullets. In the United States this year we have seen the use of plastic bullets with impunity. Maimings and injuries have been widespread. Writer Linda Tirado was covering the protests in Minneapolis following the murder of George Floyd when she was hit by a rubber bullet, causing her to lose the sight in one eye. She will be contributing to the discussion on why these bullets never were and never will be acceptable in any policing service.
Comóradh brónach i samhradh na bliana seo a bheidh ann den uair ar tugadh úsáid na bpiléar plaisteach agus rubair isteach ar ár sráideanna. Cuimhneoidh an t-imeacht seo ar na daoine a cailleadh, ar na gortuithe a rinneadh agus ar na fáthanna a n-éilítear fós go gcuirtear cosc ar philéir phlaisteacha agus rubair. Sna Stáit Aontaithe, chonaic muid piléir phlaisteacha á n-úsáid gan aon bhaol pionóis. Bhí na cithréimí agus na gortuithe déanta go forleathan. Bhí an scríbhneoir Linda Tirado ag clúdach na n-agóidí in Minneapolis i ndiaidh dhúnmharú George Floyd nuair a bhí piléar rubair á bualadh. Chaill sí an radharc i súil amháin dá dheasca. Beidh sí ag caint sa díospóireacht faoi na fáthanna nach raibh agus nach mbeidh na piléir seo soghlactha riamh i seirbhís póilíneachta ar bith.
