SS Brigadeführer Otto Freiherr von Wächter presided over a territory where hundreds of thousands of Jews and Poles were killed, including Philippe Sands’ grandfather. After the war Wächter went on the run and died in Rome while preparing to travel to Argentina on the 'ratline'. Drawing on family letters and diaries, Sands seeks to unlock the mystery that haunts Wächter's youngest son, who believes his father was a good man - how did Wächter die?
